career for you? There is a lot of fiction out there about careers. Here are 5 of the biggest myths about
careers you will find.
Myth 1. Choosing a career is easy.
Not if you want to have a really enjoyable and rewarding career it isn't. You need to consider what is
important to you, what you want to achieve in the future, what skills and experience you have, what salary
targets you want to achieve, what your work life balance should look like, and much more.
Myth 2. If someone else is happy in a career then it would be a good choice for me
Not even if you have almost everything else in common. Think about most of the people you know... how
different are they from you? Do they have a different dress sense? Do they like different foods, different
drinks? Do they watch different TV shows, read different books? If there are so many differences then how can
copying their career choice be good idea for you?
Myth 3. Someone can tell me what is the best career for me
The best consultant, the best tests, the most advance computer software, all of these things cannot tell you
what is the best career for you. They can help you to reach a decision, they can ask the right questions, make
the right suggestions, but ultimately the choice has to be yours.
Myth 4. Once you choose a career you are stuck in it for life
Once upon a time this may have been true for a lot of people. Today we live in a world that is constantly
changing and developing. Where new technology is opening up new possibilities every day. If you have been on a
career path for 5 years, 10 years or even 25 years, then there is still the option to change
Myth 5. Once your over 40 it's too late to change careers
Utter rubbish. In today's world we are seeing people working for longer. Retirement ages are getting later
and people are choosing to take on new jobs even after they officially retire. If you are over 40, over 50 or
over 60 it doesn't matter. If you want a new career you can have one.
